This neighbourhood owes its name to the tall rock upon it, part of the Castle´s enclosure. Many of the houses are dug into the rock from wich raised the Moorish stronghold.

Cave houses abound in the municipal district of Iznajar. Many of these troglodyte constructions date from the Neolitic periode.

The inside of these singular houses was divided with rooms excavated into the rock, whose number increased in parallel with the number of family members linving in it. The big advantage of this kind of buildings lies in its temperatures, staying constant during the whole year around 18º C, offering to its dwellers a warm athmosphere during the winter and freshness in the summer.
